Skálholtsstaður is one of the most historic places in Iceland. It was the capital of the country for about 750 years and is one of the most significant cultural sites in Iceland. Many of the most important events in Icelandic history were related to Skálholt and many interesting characters lived and died there. Skálholt's staff now offers to guide guests around Skálholtsstaður and go over the history in general.

You can book a guided tour for groups of more than 10 people. The tour will take you to Skálholt Cathedral, the museum, the tunnel, archeological sites and historical sites. You can book here: skalholt@skalholt.is

The tour starts in Skálholt church where various artwork and objects are examined. Special emphasis is placed on the many bishops of Skálholt,  on Gerður Helgadóttir's stained glass windows, Nína Tryggvadóttir's altarpiece and various church objects from the 15th and 16th centuries. We go to the museum in the basement of the church where Bishop Pál Jónsson's crypt is examined, which dates from 1211. We go out to the tunnel and out to the museum area, into Þorláksbúð turf church, and the walk ends at Herb Garden. The walk should suit everyone, it is fon flat terrain and takes about 30 min.

The guided tours are for groups of 10 or more people. The price is 1500 ISK per person,  children 12 yrs free of charge. 

 

Hvönn restaurant in Skálholt is open from 10:00 - 21:00 and it is ideal to check out their offers.
